Yelp International Supper Club - Twisted Fork

Wednesday, September 09, 2015

I love Yelp.  I use it in our travels to find great restaurants and other businesses.  If you read enough reviews you can get a good feel for the vibe of a place.

I love Twisted Fork and its sister restaurant Woody's.  We frequent both and have never been disappointed.  They put out a consistently great meal and the Sexy Mexican is happy - not an easy task for a restaurant.

Until last night, we were Yelp International Supper Club virgins.  About once a quarter our local Yelp hosts an International Supper Club.  Last night, we attended the most incredible Mexican/Latin Pairing Dinner at Twisted Fork in South Reno.  This was the first pairing dinner that Twisted Fork has hosted.  Needless to say...they knocked it out of the park.

Sergio Romero, the executive Chef has cut his chops in several well-known Reno establishments and has spent time training in Chicago.  This meal had a Latin flair and every course was perfectly executed.

THE MENU:

COCKTAIL DE CHAMPINONES

PASADO A MANO:  COCKTAIL DE CHAMPINONES  PAIRED WITH:  Mezcal IBA pear-ita.

  • This was like a mushroom ceviche.  A terrific vegetarian course.  Layers of flavor with house made tomato consumme, cilantro, and serrano chiles.  The pairing of the mezcal cocktail was not to my liking - I do NOT do mezcal.  However, those guests who like mezcal loved the cocktail of prickly pear juice and smokey liquor.
PREMIER TIEMPO:  AGUACATE RELLENO DE SALPICON DE JAIBA  PAIRED WITH: Union Cerveza Minerva de Mexico.
  • A lovely avocado filled with Atlantic blue crab salad.  The toasted poblano peppers and smoked jalapeno aioli brought some nice heat to this dish that was tempered well by the beer.

TORTA DE CARNITAS

SEGUNDO TIEMPO:   TORTA DE CARNITAS DE KUROBUTO AHUMADO Y MOLE DE FLOR DE JAMAICA  PAIRED WITH:  Oro de Castilla Verdejo, Spain.
  • This dish was pleasantly surprising.  The pork carnitas were cooked in a hibiscus mole. It didn't really feel like mole, more like bbq sauce - it was tasty all the same.  I love the minutely chopped carrot and jicama garnish on top.  All served on a steam bun, ala dim sum. The white wine pairing was from Spain - because Mexican wine is lacking in both quality and availability.  The pairing was excellent - very much like a Fume Blanc.
TERCER TIEMPO:  TAMALITO DE COSTILLA DE RES  PAIRED WITH:  Noster "Inicial" Priorat, Spain.
  • This sweet corn tamal was topped with tender braised short ribs and topped with tomatoes, crema fresca and queso fresco.  Paired perfectly with a rich red wine - this was the star of the show.

PASTEL DE TRES LECHES

EL POSTRE: PASTEL DE TRES LECHES PAIRED WITH:  Cafe de olla
  • Tres Leches cake is one of my very favorites. This was served in a mini mason jar and topped with strawberries, pecans, cognac and butter cream. Paired with a spiced Mexican coffee spiked with anejo tequila and topped with cognac cinnamon whipped cream.  Perfect ending to a perfect evening.

These items are not on their everyday menu.  But we have never been disappointed with their salads, burgers, steaks and more at both establishments.  I'm sure you will enjoy.

As far as Yelp dinners - we had a fantastic time and can't wait to do it again.  Making new friends over great food and good cocktails makes the best kind of evening.

eat.  love.  live well.
